i'd like to see the profits made by transport companies, and see whether they can increase the salaries without affecting transport cost, and so much money is lost with 'free' transport :S

The employees in public transport deserve a raise cause their work is really very difficult : wake up 4 in the morning, take out the bus from the counpund (lots of manoeuvers which can take nearly 1 hour), drive in the stress of the traffic whole day, come back late, park the bus in the coumpund (same issue), do overtimes to get little more money to feed their family, go back to sleep late (midnight) ==> thus these drivers are extremly tired and thus it can cause more accident

analogy - the developers in private sector deserve a raise 'coz their work is very difficult - having to sleep only for 3 hours, maintain their gears and their own body ('coz they sit all day require exercise), drive through road traffic which is stressful, fight traffic (bandwidth), stick to a busy schedule, do overtime (well, overtime is done almost every day,) feed family, kids, get stressed even more (need to deal with wife,) - thus these developers are extremely tired and thus they can cause more problems (like the creation of "evil" and "bad"/"buggy" codes) sure, they do benefit a lot from companies, but they do lack time to do other stuff (like learning new things), and need money to be constantly updated, and they are all in bad shape (ok, most of them are.)

my point is - everybody faces the same troubles above mentioned (more or less.)

awesome explanation but... everybody faces teh same 'troubles' to a certain extent. each case is different. I can understand teh struggle and issues that developers face Smile I can understand ur frustration. And we all know why those EU companies come here to exploit our 'cheap' but talented labour til' they find something better and go elsewhere for cheaper.

But wait a minute, we're talking about different problems here.. the salary scale of bus company employees is different. there are people having Rs.5K per month as salary, again it's ok to earn Rs.5K/month if you already have a house, and external revenues, or a lot of family members who already work and co-orperate. But think of it, how it might be possible to live with even Rs.8-9K/month in Mu, if you're:
1) single
2) have to pay the rent
3) pay all the other bills
4) have to buy food for u & ur family

The underlying problem is that everyone needs a pay raise... Rolling Eyes Prices are increasing, but all salaries are still the same - middle-class people are the worst-hit.

As for free transport, i think it's a great thing. Consider my case, if it wasn't implemented (forget 3/4), i would be paying Rs. 88 daily to Réduit. In a month, that's Rs. 2000.
& considering an average family with 2 children & earnings of around Rs. 20,000 - that's quite something being spent into transport! Neutral
Although indirectly, the gov still gets back the money as tax, it's a great relief indeed to many families. & i know there's widespread abuse of that "free transport." Neutral

Running away from the problem won't solve it. & politicians still stick to their old populist agendas... IMO, a whole new generation of "clean" politicians are required... (which won't happen as long as those old jackals are here...) Rolling Eyes

Really true, that's why a lot of the middle class segment as you say are leaving mauritius for a 'better' world...

talking about that 'abuse', it's more or less the same thing for any measure implemented in mauritius, they implement any thing without studying the consequences. It's more about their popularity than anything else... processes of any ministry are not well thought and forget about professionalism (but well I admit there has been some improvement, if you compare to like 5-7 years for some processes)

How? Who? I honestly don't know. How clean is 'clean' ?

There's a huge debate about that at my office here. My older colleagues view us - the new generation - as passive and not interested and competent enough for politics & management.

@Nubz
For me, that makes Rs. 20 more for aller-retour home-Réduit. Neutral
I'm not paying now... but when my bus pass expires, i'll have to pay! Sad

1 week - 20 x 6 = Rs. 120
1 month = Rs. 480

Rs. 500 - that's a lot! Neutral
