No, vegans don't get any health issues if they plan their diet properly. The milk and meat industry is such a big industry that guiding people into understanding where they can get their nutrients from other foods that are better for health would mean terrible loss to these industries. Since we're very young we're being told that we need meat for protein and milk for calcuim. Where do the cows get their protein and calcium?! From grass! Yes, just grass.

The human body was not conceived to digest meat (which is a secondary type of protein, i.e. animals eat grains etc, then human consume their meat. The primary source of protein itself are grains, legumes and vegetables). The human intestine is long, very long as compared to that of a carnivorous animal, like the lion for example, which have a short intestine. Their gastric juices are at a ph of 1 which is ideal to digest those meat. The human gastric juices are at a ph of 3-4, very much like that of herbivores. We have flat teeth, like that of a monkey. The teeth of a lion is appropriate for eating meat, ours not.

Concerning milk, it is not the best source of calcium you can get. First of all, humans past the age of infancy don't have any enzymes (lactase, we have it when we're babies, then it disappears) present in the body that can digest milk. So, the body creates a sort of mucus substance to be able to digest it and thus we have lots of diseases like asthma and all kinds of milk intolerance resulting in bloating, cramping, wind and diarrhoea.

Sorry for the long post. Rolling Eyes

Vegans can get all the protein they need from legumes (e.g., beans, tofu, peanuts) and grains (e.g., rice, corn, whole wheat breads and pastas); calcium from broccoli, kale, collard greens, tofu, fortified juices and soymilks; iron from chickpeas, spinach, pinto beans, and soy
products; and B12 from fortified foods or supplements.

Did you know that your body stuggle to get the calcium from milk?

I can keep writing about this but I'm not here to make a lecture.
You can read more about it here http://www.vegansociety.com/html/food/nutrition/calcium.php
or any sections of the vegansociety website.

There are more non-vegans on hospital beds than there are vegans!

"The consumption of animal fats and proteins has been linked to heart disease, colon and lung cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, kidney disease, hypertension, obesity, and a number of other debilitating conditions. Cows' milk contains ideal amounts of fat and protein for young calves, but far too much for humans. And eggs are higher in cholesterol than any other food, making them a leading contributor to cardiovascular disease. The American Dietetic Association reports that vegetarian/vegan diets are associated with reduced risks for all of these conditions." ...source http://www.vegan.org/about_veganism/health.html

I've experienced it myself. Before turning vegan, at the age of 26, I had a high cholesterol level. My mum has it too (she's not vegan though). After turning vegan, in less than 6 months, my cholesterol level is normal until now, without taking any medecine whatsoever.
Cholesterol does not exist in any plants, vegs or fruits, not even in vegetable oils. Cholesterol exists only in such foods that come from animal origin.
So, I made the choice. Some people prefer to eat the meat and then take a pill. For me I feel better just eating healthy and my body thanks me everyday for it! Smile

A lot of vegans eat vegan 'meat', sausages, burgers etc. I sometimes do eat them not because they remind me of meat but to get my proteins. I'm not having too many of those these days as most of them are high in soya and I'm a bit intolerant to soy products. I prefer the taste of vegetables and mostly unprocessed food, they are more healthy!

true true - natural vegetables are way more healthy. hence the need for people to always have a small place to cultivate some crops.

Vegetables that are sold contain enough pesticide to make your own bomb! affraid

So it's best to cultivate your own legume! Razz
