No, i'm against capital punishment. Neutral

The probability that an innocent is sentenced is too great! & actually if you want to implement capital punishment, the whole crime investigation procedures should change. There should conclusive evidence that the person has really committed the crime before doing anything.
But that's where MPF fails... they don't have anything close to a proper scientific police (no DNA testing, no evidence analysis). The FSL is hugely under-staffed & under-equipped.

This whole discussion in pointless. Instead of making the Police more efficient at combating crime, they are arguing on capital punishment.
Tackle the problem at the roots! pfff...

Re: capital punishment in Mauritius

Post by fadilnet on Mon Feb 18, 2008 7:42 am

my guess is that "the re-activation of capital punishment" is merely a talk being used my politicians to cause fear amongst other things (do their own bidding).
there has been no rise in the number of crimes IMHO. with the increase in the level of access to information (esp. through radio shows which keep on nagging people about the atrocity of certain crimes), people are scared and believe that they could be next on the line to get killed.
an analogy to the capital punishment talk would be the publishing of the names of students who obtained seats in new colleges, after the SC exams, regardless of privacy issues, so as to increase transparency.
why increase transparency? 'coz nobody trusts the system and everybody believes that the system is corrupted.
in the case of capital punishment, transparency is replaced by security. don't you want to teach someone to be righteous instead of killing the latter for you've failed to put some sanity in one's life?
promoting education is the answer and it's one of the main knots in what can be called "a crisis of crises."
blame no one (some are blaming Ramgoolam. i blame parents, teachers and the actual rotten system which push one's will to success), try to solve current issues by tackling each crises till the crisis of crises is over. Sure, it will take time - but noone wants to have an innocent killed through capital punishment 'coz the existing system is wrong and has not been fixed yet.

Re: capital punishment in Mauritius

yeah it's true. the risk of executing an innocent is too high.

another factor that must be considered is that capital punishment has never really produced results in countries which have adopted it or still do. the crime rate is more or less the same.

and those who perpetrate atrocious/bloody murders will not really be discouraged by the fact that they might lose their lives after that. they don't care. they are usually insane. they will keep on doing it whether cap punishment exists or not Neutral

I don't think there's enough of us to call that a petition Razz Let's just wait and see. My hunch is that since the PM himself is against it, capital punishment would not be brought back.

Yes, it is... there was someone who was sentenced to death, but then capital punishment was removed. So he instead got life imprisonment.
& actually, i haven't seen anyone recently being condemned for life, but there were sentences of 40 years+. Smile

Totally against it. It's like getting to the same level as the guy. And everyone has the right to live Razz Joke apart, I'm against it. Will the death of the 'guy' be lesson to others? I don't think so. Life imprisonment is better. He'll have time to think about what he did and repent. May even turn onto a new leaf.

Sayuka told me about a film where someone was accused for a rape and it was just after his death that they realised he wasn't the rapist. Things like that may happen...

Re: capital punishment in Mauritius

Post by Jevin on Mon Feb 18, 2008 6:42 pm

The problem with capital punishment is that in the end, only the poor and the unfortunate who will be executed. For as we all know, money does wonders sometimes, in some country.

I absolutely love Mauritius and I think the lack of justice here is the only thing that's wrong here.

I know people who did atrocious things, they lost their jobs (ti p travaye dan Gouvernement couma nu dire), they were jobless, the next party took over, they got their jobs back.

I was thinking a lot about capital punishment lately and I thought of something. Once justice is done, the guilty gets his sentence (say 5 years). But what about the victim? When does the victims sentence end? Does it ever? For this reason, I would say I'm for life sentence.

Besides giving someone life sentence means giving him food (that he has contributed in making) for the rest of his life, giving him 5 years is feeding him 5 years before he gets out and has no job and is bound to steal and do stupid things.

c vrai, life imprisonment is a more appropriate punishment for atrocious crimes. but then the issue of space in prisons might crop up.

Re: capital punishment in Mauritius

Post by Nash-1 on Mon Feb 18, 2008 6:53 pm

frankly guys and girls i was about to say i am for capital punishment. then i read your arguments. it is true that the incidence of error can be high and we cannot bring back the dead if the person is proven innocent posthumusly.
i was thinking that capital punishment could create a fright in criminals. but as someone said here, those criminals dont think of all these before killing or brutalising. they just follow an "instinct".

so i vote against capital punishment too.

the so called "instinct" isn't passed on genetically. it's not instinct (unless you're referring to the instinct to kill which is a recessive gene rather than a dominant one.)
Still, they kill for a reason - rational or not. Why? - due to a combination of factors ranging from education to the environment they were raised in.
